German pioneer aircraft designer

He invented the seaplane and during World War II designed the Do-17 flying pencil bomber, the mainstay of the Luftwaffe during the air raids on Britain 1940-41. Born in Bavaria, he founded the Dornier Metallbau works at Friedrichshafen, Lake Constance, in 1922.
